Maple Valley

Vulnerability Assessment and Action Plan

The City of Maple Valley is located in King County with an approximate population of 28,000 and is centered within the urban-wildland interface. Maple Valley has observed an increase in number of extreme weather days and is concerned about the impact of increased intensity rainfall on localized flooding and climate changes on local ecosystems and forest health.

So far, Maple Valley has adopted their first Climate Action and Resiliency Plan in June 2025, which includes policies to identify and address climate vulnerabilities, review and implement regional resiliency plans, and plan protections for wildlife corridors and urban trees/native forests. As the City navigates the risks of a changing climate, they seek to work with the Collaborative to increase capacity for climate work and support their developing approach to climate action.

The Small Community Cohort Program Project

Through participation in the Small Communities Cohort, Maple Valley seeks to conduct a city-specific climate vulnerability assessment and provides actionable plans for high priority climate vulnerabilities that identify key impacts, adaptation actions, and opportunities for collaboration. Deliverables and outcomes from this project will help Maple Valley identify and work towards addressing climate change related hazards and prioritizing where limited funds should be spent to best support the Maple Valley community.

Project Goals

01

Conduct a Vulnerability Assessment specific to Maple Valley.

02

Provide Actionable Plans for high priority vulnerabilities that identify key impacts, adaptation actions, and opportunities for collaboration.

The Small Communities Cohort Program, hosted by the Puget Sound Climate Preparedness Collaborative, supports climate preparedness projects in 12 smaller and/or less resourced jurisdictions and Tribes through staffing and consulting support.
