Small Communities Cohort Program
Tukwila
Tree Education + Outreach Program Materials
The City of Tukwila is located in South King County surrounding the Duwamish/Green River watershed. The city is home to approximately 23,000 people with around 46% of the population speaking a language other than English at home.
With a lower-income and more diverse demographic that traditionally receives less engagement and resiliency investments, Tukwila faces greater vulnerability to the regional impacts of climate change, including riparian flooding, extreme heat, and poor air quality during wildfires.
So far, in supporting and growing its urban forestry and climate preparation efforts, Tukwila has developed green partnerships, host tree resources and programs for residents, committed to tree canopy goals in its comprehensive plan, and is currently working on updating their tree codes and ordinances. Continuing their work, the Small Communities Cohort Program is supporting Tukwila in developing further urban forestry education outreach products to commercial/industrial property owners, residential property owners, and non-property-owning residents, with specific attention to language access.
The Small Community Cohort Program Project
Through participation in the Small Communities Cohort, the City of Tukwila seeks to develop and communicate tree canopy education, particularly for multi-lingual communities. Tukwila aims to mitigate its vulnerability to extreme heat, landslides, and flooding due to climate change by promoting urban tree canopy care, expansion and appreciation through the development of a citywide, public education and outreach campaign for property owners in every zoning type.
Project Goals
01
Develop tree education and outreach program materials, with consideration of language accessibility, by utilizing existing public urban forestry content.
02
Support the resilience of tree canopy on private property by increasing property owners’ understanding of its role in climate preparedness.
03
Support efforts to mitigate Tukwila’s vulnerability to climate impacts by promoting urban tree canopy’s care, expansion, and appreciation.
