Des Moines

Climate Change and Resilience Element

The City of Des Moines is located in south King County to the east shore of Puget Sound and neighbors the suburbs of SeaTac to the northeast, Kent to the east, and Federal Way to the South. The City is home to a population of approximately 33,000 and includes the Des Moines Beach and Marina and Highline College.

Since becoming part of the King County-Cities Collaboration (K4C) partnership for climate action earlier this year, the City has dedicated itself to addressing climate change through resources, programs, and educational campaigns. Des Moines is currently working, with support from the Small Communities Cohort Program, to develop a comprehensive plan for climate change and resilience, with a focus on sea level rise, extreme precipitation, extreme heat, and other climate hazards.

The Small Community Cohort Program Project

Through participation in the Small Communities Cohort, Des Moines seeks to formulate specific policies and guidelines regarding climate change to help the City with preparation and planning, management, public engagement, and other areas pertinent to climate change and resilience.
